Harnessing the power of the Internet for children with special needs.
Every family that has a child with special needs faces particular challenges, especially as it relates to communication and collaboration with and between their children, their family, caregivers, teachers and other professionals. Of course, when my girls were young, there were no social network tools available to securely share such personal information.
Well, that has all changed and it’s about time. Kristin and Jon Erickson, special needs parents and the founders of Parlerai have developed the
world’s first social network for children with special needs. No matter a child’s age or developmental stage, no matter a parent’s need for communication, internet exploration, document organization or information, Parlerai provides a safe and secure environment which changes lives. It changed theirs
and now they are making this most important service available to your families.
View their brochure online by visiting: https://www.parlerai.com/docs/brochure.pdf. Parents are being given an opportunity to experience Parlerai (by creating a completely controlled network for themselves and their child) for thirty days ABSOLUTLEY FREE.
All you need to do is visit www.parlerai.com and enter CODE #CSTC09. It is that simple. If, after this free trial you would like to become a member, the

It is a stressful time for parents of a child with special needs when the child has been ill, hospitalized, or finally coming home for the very first time. The nurse case manager may be a wealth of information but it can also be very overwhelming for parents. Here are a few tips when considering a Pediatric Home Care Agency.
- Look for an agency that specializes in Pediatric Home Care if possible. Agencies that provide care for both adult and pediatric clients may not be as specialized as your child needs or may need to send a nurse to your home that is more comfortable with adults. Choosing a pediatric agency ensures that all nurses being sent to care for your child are trained in the care of children.
- Ask about licensing regulations and how the agency you are considering is regulated. It is important to understand that all agencies are NOT licensed the same and you will want to choose an agency that is strictly regulated in your state to ensure that your child gets the safest care.
- Ask how the nurses that may be coming to your home have been screened for safety and for skills. It is important to know that the nurses have had background checks and that they have been trained by a reputable school of nursing.
- Look for an agency that provides good orientation to your child and is proficient in teaching the nurses the skills needed for the care of your child. Most licensed pediatric agencies have a pediatric education program within their organization to make certain that each nurse who may care for your child has the skills and education to do it in a safe and efficient manner.
- Make certain you know your financial responsibility, if any, for the care being provided in your home. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to search more than one agency if you don’t get the answers you want. Reputable agencies have no problem being questioned and will offer you information openly: you just have to know what to ask.
- Prepare to be open and honest about the expectations of the nurses in your home and be prepared to provide clean areas in your home where the nurse may prepare formula, wash his/her hands, and use the restroom in the course of the shift they are in your home.
It is an adjustment for any family with a special needs child to bring nurses (virtual strangers) into their home. The rewards for your child are most often worth the sacrifice. Planning and research can make the experience one of the best there is in providing what your child needs. Doing your research and asking the right questions can lead to the right choice for your child.

After being left with no options for my childs educational needs, I decided to take the advice of a deaf friend and contact the ADA. So, I called the ADA and they referred me to the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. I called there and was only able to leave a message, of which I did. I was called back within a few hours and told that my case would need to be handled by the Denver office. I took down the number and was transferred to the Denver office where I again left a message.
I then called my daughters teacher and asked a question. She mentioned that the Parent Connection was a place that could answer some of my questions and help me. I called The Parent Connection and left a message there too. Within a few hours I was called and was able to explain my frustration and ask for help. I was helped by another mother who has two sons with varying degrees of special needs.
After explaining a bit of my childs history and what was recently happening and how I would like to see the problems resolved, I was told that the Parents Connection rep would contact the Utah State Office of Education and see what could be done. Now, I am not sure exactly all that the Parent Connection does, but, so far I have gotten more help from them, than I have any other school or district office.
I am hoping that tomorrow I will hear from the Denver ADA office. If not, I will be calling them on Monday. I also will be waiting for the rep from the Parent Connection to return my call with more information and resources that she is able to gather from the Utah State Office of Education. I will be keeping a record of all these calls here on the blog.

If our school district cared enough to do their job, they would not have pawned the last phone call off on USDB. Yes, I said it…Our district rep asked the USDB rep to call me and explain the “why’s”. I know that the district rep doesn’t want to have to deal with me. Apparently she remembers how upset I was with her when my daughter was in the districts preschool program. No matter what reasons she comes up with to dismiss what I have just said, it won’t matter. Her job is Special Needs children, and because it is, she should have known that funding was being cut for my daughter, and she should have been taking care of it long before I had to call her and inform her of the whole situation.
After my disucussion with the USDB representative, I called the Wasatch School District, and asked to talk to the rep. She was there, and I was able to talk to her about the call she pawned off on USDB, and also the options that had been discussed. After that legthy discussion and getting nowwhere, I asked what the school district was going to do. Her general response was that it wasn’t her problem and that USDB was responsible. She basically stated that I could take my child, ask a family or neighbor, or return my daughter to school in the district. I also mentioned that fact that USDB stated that a teacher could come up here, but that they also stated that would not help both my child and the other child that is currently riding whith my daughter to go to school.
Apparently our school district would love to have a program up here like there is in SLC, but, the likelihood of that is up for debate. As stated in a previous post, my daughters needs are not just for her hearing issues. I have no idea what the other childs needs are, but, there are at least 5 people that would need to be brought in on a daily or as needed basis for my child.
The call ended with the district rep saying that I shoudl do whatever I needed to in order to get the services for my daughter that she needed. I had mentioned that the 2 magic words that make state employees jump to attention would have to be said, and they would need to get their stuff together and figure it all out for my child. What are those 2 magic words? DUE PROCESS. She told me that she could not help me, that it wasn’t her responsibility because the district was not financially responsible for my daughter. I would need to go back to USDB. She also said that if I had to go the route of lawyers then that is what I should do.
