Rotator Cuff Exercises Really Do Help You To Recover Faster

Unbelievably. nearly eight million people in the United States will suffer a shoulder injury this year and well over half of them will be a direct result of injuring the rotator cuff muscles.  If you have undergone surgery, suffered a cuff tear or simply have a weak shoulder rotator cuff specific exercises will help with the rehabilitation of your injured or weak shoulder.

These are exercises that are specifically designed to work on the rotator cuff.  This is a group of four small muscles that help to keep the ball and socket of the shoulder joint stable.  They all connect the scapula or shoulder blade to the upper arm bone.  Each of them takes a slightly different route around the shoulder and between them they form a cuff of muscle that encloses the joint and holds it in place whilst allowing us the broad range of movement that we enjoy.

When these muscles are weak or damaged it weakens the shoulder joint.

Following surgery or an injury it is important to rest the muscles and allow them to heal.  Doing any kind of load bearing exercise can damage muscles even further and can in extreme cases result in tendons failing completely.  So always rest after surgery or injury to allow healing before starting any rehabilitation exercises.  It is equally important to carry out passive movement of the shoulder to keep the joint supple during this healing process.

Once the passive phase is over you can start rotator cuff specific exercises.  These will be gentle movements using very light resistance aimed at improving the muscles in this very important group.  As these muscles improve you will feel a marked improvement in the flexibility of the shoulder and a reduction in pain.

With the vast majority of shoulder injuries being soft tissue damage, physical therapy will feature in the rehabilitation of nearly all shoulder injuries, either after or instead of surgery.  Most shoulder injuries can be solved without resorting to surgery but it is important to make sure that you are doing the right sort of exercises to avoid aggravating the condition any further.

Shoulder pain cannot be worked through like so many other injuries and need to be rested. Taking anti-inflammatory drugs and pain killers can, whilst giving some short term relief actually cause you to do more damage by masking symptoms.

Specific shoulder exercises aimed at rehabilitating and strengthening the rotator cuff group of muscles will on the other hand actually heal the shoulder and strengthen it avoiding a repetition of the injury.

Just a word of warning though.  Never focus on just one shoulder when exercising.  If you have suffered a shoulder injury you have a fifteen percent chance of injuring your other shoulder so by exercising them both you can go a long way towards avoiding this.

So, in summary, rest your injured shoulder for two to three weeks, keep it moving with passive exercises to avoid your joint freezing up and then start shoulder specific exercises gradually building up until full pain free shoulder movement has been restored.
