Installing an elevator in his house is a way to expand the number of years that may live in your home, even if you or a friend or family member have health limitations that make it difficult to raise and lower steps.
I was with an elderly woman last week who was looking to buy a new home. She had bad knees and had to take the stairs slowly. One of the things I was looking for is whether your new property would accommodate a master on the main level (unless you have one) and a stair lift on the stairs.
I had assumed that you just have to look at the houses of one level, but every house that had been considered a ladder in it. One house had a magnificent Y-shaped staircase in the lounge that offered split into 2 directions. An old house had a precarious staircase leading to the basement finished, and one house had a 2-level style staircase that went to the top. My client told me that this was not exactly what I was looking for her and said “we know that when she saw it.” It has been hard for her to work in line if the homes had an interest in hosting a lifting step, because most developers do not have the steps in its Multiple Listing Service photos.
This customer gave me a little education about what is required to install a stair lift. Basically, they are looking for a long, straight steps from first to second floor. We found one of the newly built houses looked, so are definitely out there. Ladder can be installed in other types of stairs, of course, but as always, is more complicated, more expensive it is.
If you are building or buying a home you want to grow old, is an excellent idea to examine how the home front can be changed to suit your wishes when you’re older. Some things - like the wide corridors that can accommodate wheelchairs - are nice features that might need to anyway
Other things, like the bars in the bath, are simple to add later if needed.
What is not so easy to plan if it is needed wheelchair access to the rooms above the house. Even if you are not in a wheelchair up and down stairs can be a challenge for many seniors.
You may want to consider installing a stair lift.
A stairway lift is running on a track that is installed on the side of the stairs and plugged into the wall for power. Stairs should be against the wall or a railing has been strengthened to accommodate the full weight of a person in a seat, and the track along the wall. A stairway lift can help to bring food and clothing up and down the stairs, too. You can take more or less everything that can carry up to the stairs with a stairlift, not exceeding the safety of their weight.
Although they can be expensive to install, many older people are so happy with the idea of having the ability to stay in their homes as they age, are more than willing to pay the price to have their home updated to accommodate their evolving mobility needs.
