Wheelchairs are used by hundreds of thousands in the UK for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, fracture, amputation, spinal cord injury, old age, obesity and many other reasons.
There are many variations of the manual wheelchair but they all have many features in common that make them instantly recognisable from regular chairs. The main (and most obvious) difference is that regular chairs have a lack of wheels.
For the most part, manually operated wheelchairs have 2 large wheels at the back and 2 small wheels at the front. The larger rear wheels have an aluminium hand rim which allows the chair to be propelled by the occupant. At the top rear of the chair exists push handles to allow the wheelchair to be pushed by a third party.
The tires on a wheelchair are made from rubber and fall into 3 general classes; pneumatic, semi-pneumatic and solid rubber. Pneumatic tires are, as expected, filled with air. They provide the most comfortable ride but like bike tires, are susceptible to flats. Semi-pneumatic tires are similar to pneumatic tire, however rather than air, they are filled with a gel, this gives a less comfortable ride, however they are much less susceptible to flats. Solid rubber tires are as can be expected, solid rubber. These tires never go flat, however they can be somewhat uncomfortable and weigh alot more.
Wheelchairs also have brakes, these brakes are not the same as car breaks, that is, they are not designed to slow the wheelchair down (in most cases, wheelchairs do not achieve speeds high enough to have requirement of any braking system other than the hands on the hand rim) but to stop it rolling away when on a sloped surface without the need of the occupant applying constant pressure to the hand rim.
To stop the wheelchair occupants’ feet from touching the floor, all wheelchairs come equipped with flip up foot rests. These ingenious pieces of plastic also have a shaped heel loop to provide support and keeps the foot positioned on the centre of the foot rest.
